Health classes explained
The four main tiers, what they signal, and the factors that shift you between them.
Insurance companies organize term pricing using rate classes. Naming shifts a bit between carriers, but the tiers stay similar: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then stepped ratings for greater risk. Smokers face a separate tier ladder at higher costs.
What underwriters look at
Body measurements, vital signs and lipids, family cardiac or cancer events before age 60, motor-vehicle record, medications, work and pastimes, and tobacco/nicotine. Top class demands good marks nearly across the board; Preferred loosens a bit; Standard Plus and Standard permit controlled issues like managed high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
Your self-rating points to a starting tier: Excellent suggests Preferred Plus, Very good implies Preferred, Good points to Standard Plus and Average indicates Standard. Quotes build from that class; the carrier validates it post-underwriting. Uncertain? Quote multiple tiers, compare, and let the form settle it. Overstating health does not cut the final price—it just clouds the forecast.
